Meal times at Forest School for Life

Meal times are highly sociable events where we often cook around a fire, gathering as a community to exchange stories and experiences.

We advocate for healthy eating, preparing meals with fresh, local ingredients and inviting children to participate.

They learn about the origins of their food, the methods of cultivation, and the processes of harvesting and cooking.

Our environmentally conscious approach includes composting, strict zero waste practices and a prohibition on single-use plastic items. nature. And our children grow strong, resilient and ready for life.

Sample menus: What will my child be eating?

We vary up our menus, however to give you an idea of the sort of food your child can expect, we’ve provided some sample menus.

We are happy to discuss menus with parents and cater for children with different food allergies and cultural/religious requirements. If your child has any particular dislikes or favourite dishes please let us know.

We are also happy to support you if you are weaning your baby.

The importance of healthy eating

A good balanced diet is vital for children to develop healthily along with fresh air and regular exercise. We are happy to provide all the children in our care with healthy meals, snacks and drinks, or to serve food provided by their parents. Please do note that we are a vegetarian setting.

We encourage children to choose healthy options and to experiment by trying new foods from other cultures. Children are at times encouraged to help in the preparation of food and meals, following all good food hygiene procedures and child friendly equipment. We feel this builds not only confidence in developing an essential life skill of food prep and cooking, but also instils trust in them and builds their self esteem by contributing to the group and sharing what they have helped to make.

We do not permit children to have fizzy drinks or sweets, and ask you provide water only in your child’s drinks bottle.

Children are offered filtered water or oat milk. In rare circumstances when we feel a child needs fluid (for example very hot or very cold days) a weakened juice or hot chocolates will be provided to encourage the consumption of fluids!

To support your child’s understanding and to support our all-inclusive approach to working with your children, staff and students are asked to role model healthy eating. All ages of children sit together for snacks and meals, and our staff join the children for lunch to encourage conversation and positive interactions around mealtimes.
